Ofir in southern Minho at the mouth of the River Cavado has little more to it than the fine beach fringed with pine trees, the estuary and a few shops and hotels, so it's perfect for a quiet break.



A couple of km inland is Fao, a typical small town, then further south down the coast Apulia, with more good beaches. To the north is Esposende and beyond that Sao Bartolomeu de Mar, about 15km south of Viana do Castelo. Most of this coastline is protected from development. The sea, fishing and harvesting seaweed are the mainstays of these communities and you'll see the weed stacked to dry in the sun before being used as fertiliser on the local fields. This tradition has guaranteed highly productive land and vegetables of superb flavour.
